WHO WE ARE
Bica was founded in 1990 as a private, grassroots organization by a group of islanders and foreign residents alike who were concerned about the deterioration of Roatan’s environment and that of the Bay Islands in general. We are still a private, grassroots organization that relies on the financial and spiritual support of all people like you who care about the environment of the Bay Islands.

WHAT WE DO
As our resources allow, BICA engages in many activities to help conserve and protect the environment of the Bay Islands:
--MANAGING THE SANDY BAY - WEST END MARINE RESERVE
--MANAGING THE PORT ROYAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
--EDUCATING THE TOURIST COMMUNITY ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT OF ROATAN
--PROMOTING SOUND ENVIRONMENTAL TOURISM
--PROMOTING SOUND ENVIRONMENTAL BUILDING PRACTICES
-- COMMUNITY EDUCATION. BICA visits schools on the islands every year with a presentation about one aspect of the island's ecology. We organize field trips and supply the schools with educational materials which we produce. This year, 2009, we will feature turtles, wetlands and watersheds.
--COMMUNITY CLEANUPSl BICA was instrumental in acquiring the first trash removal trucks in 1992. Every year, BICA identifies communities on the island and recruits volunteers to participate in beach cleanups, especially inside the marine protected area and the Coxen Hole area as well.
--MONITORING RUNOFF - During the rainy season, we target key areas with a high potential for destructive runoff and conduct qualitative monitoring of the creeks in the area.
--REPORTING VIOLATIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS: BICA responds to complaints by individual citizens about violations of environmental laws,...
The challenges are many. With your help, we can all participate in conserving the environment of Roatan.
