The Port Royal Reserve is a 1000+ acre Wildlife
Refuge in the Eastern Section of Roatan.
Established by Municipal Decree in 1978, it is home
to the Yellow Napped Parrot, the Great Crested
Mango, and other exotic species of birds. Among the
more exotic species found in the Reserve are Boa
Constrictors, the red coral snake, black and green
iguanas, and anolis. Migratory Birds such as
Warblers, Vireos, tanagers, hawks, and kestrels
find a winter home in the Reserve. The reserve also
includes remnants of the Primary Forest that at one
time covered the island. The secondary forest
includes large stands of Honduran Pine and oak.
The Wildlife Refuge has critical environmental importance to Roatan. It provides a watershead area for the four communities that surround the park and a primary and secondary forest cover for the rich biodiversity that inhabits the refuge.
The Reserve is managed by BICA through comanagement agreements with the Government of Honduras. The Reserve is not yet open to the public.
