BICA MONITORS SEDIMENTATION FROM ROADS AND CREEKS DURING THE RAINY SEASON

What Sedimenation can do to a reef

In the past few years, we have all become aware of what happens to the reef when roads are not built correctly and buildings are put up without proper safeguards. Sediment washes into our creeks during rainy season and then pollutes the ocean. The reef is smothered. Our beautiful clear water becomes cloudy. Slowly, the reef dies.

BICA has begun to monitor the flow of sediment through our creeks during rainy season. Qualitative surveys are implemented to identify critical areas (creeks) sedimenting our coastal areas, specifically in the marine reserve (Sandy Bay, West End and West Bay). Considering the amount of development activities that continues to take place on the entire island we are hoping to extend this survey to other communities. We are in dire need of volunteers, donations, transportation and staff.
