BICA's 2007 REFORESTATION PROJECT
Conducted in partnership with USAID-MIRA, The Environmental Unit of the Roatan Municipality (UMA), Carambola Botanical Gardens, BICA, Robert V. Stanley and Henry Dale Jackson, Public Schools in Sandy Bay, are establishing a 3000 fruit & hardwood plant nursery.
The purpose of this project is to promote the regeneration of degraded areas primarily in the communities of Sandy Bay, West End & West Bay and priority critical areas in other communities on Roatan. Expected outcome include: increase of water production in aquifers, reduction of sediment loads in coastal areas, fire wood production, community participation and forest protection. These plants will be ready for planting this upcoming rainy season.
This activity offers 6th Graders from both schools the opportunity to learn basic forestry techniques such as soil mixing, bagging, plant propagation, maintenance and direct participation in reforestation of public areas such as highways, roadsides, beaches, creek banks and school yards. Low income families will have immediate access to
fire wood planted in their back yards which will reduce encroachment on private lands for
cutting forest trees for fire wood.
Starting late November 2007 these plants will be available to property owners for reforestation of their creek areas, hillsides, lowlands and beaches. Mahogany, Teak, Cedar, Palmettos, Sea Grapes, Coco Plums, Mangoes, Cashews are among the most readily available specimens. All property owners interested in these plants are encouraged to contact BICA at 445 – 3214 Monday thru Friday from 9a.m. to 5p.m., and place their orders. Plantlets will be allocated free of charge on a first come first served basis.
Consider protecting and reforesting your watershed areas,
creek banks and beaches….
